Being on your own side – why building inner strength can change the world!
What do you think it takes to be your best, strongest self— to live a rich, full and meaningful life?
If you listen to our culture’s dominant messages, it might not be what you think! We’re saturated with ideals around the importance of appearance, which feeds directly into poor body image, low self-worth and a host of behaviors which harm us.
Interestingly, when we interpret “be your best self” as being more “be your best self….in a different body” we can easily be distracted from the elements of life that enrich and nourish us. In other words, all the time, effort and brain space that we apply to thinking about food, eating and our bodies could be put to use in a more meaningful way. Ways that build strength, resilience and a sense of true purpose.
While there isn’t one singular definition for “inner strength,” a survey of women around the world revealed that eight out of 10 women feel they don’t have enough of it – a startling statistic which represents a “strength gap” – the difference between how strong a woman feels vs. how strong she feels she could be, or her potential.
We have a tendency to criticise ourselves when we feel like we fall short – whether these are our own expectations or those of others – which not only makes us feel worse, it also makes us less likely to nourish and move our bodies from a place of care and consideration.
So what is the alternative?
Building inner strength is essentially about having your own back or being on your own side, particularly when things aren’t going well. A critical element of this is self-compassion, which is a wonderful skill to cultivate.
Imagine for a moment that you treat and talk to yourself just as well as you do your friends and family! That is self-compassion. Rather than “letting yourself off the hook,” self-compassion recognizes that you too are human and invites you to find space for self-care rather than self-criticism and nourishment instead of restriction.
It starts with each and every one of us. But we can’t work alone. Building a sense of community around us is essential to building strength both within ourselves, and supporting others to do the same. When we can support each other’s hopes and dreams within a spirit of unconditional acceptance, we’re well on the way to changing the world. Please join us!
We’re always looking for opportunities to spread messages of strength, resilience and kindness and so we’ve teamed up with Special K to share our message of what inner strength means to us as part of their #StrongFeedsStrong program, which is a partnership they have with the U.N. Foundation’s Girl Up program. You can find more information at www.strongfeedsstrong.com
