Over the past few weeks, I’ve been banding together with Eating Disorders experts from all over world in response to Weight Watchers announcement that they’re offering free memberships to teen in the US. I’ll have to admit, I was VERY happy to tweet my butt off in support of my US friends but was also at the same thinking “thank goodness that’s not us….” Well, today folks, news has hit the fan – it IS us. Weight Watchers Australia is playing copycat (how uncreative) in aiming to capture the teen market as part of their very strategic move to expand their market base, improve revenue and create new customers…for life. You can read more about this move from Weight Watchers, and why it’s a TERRIBLE idea, in this wonderful piece from my colleague Rebecca Scritchfield. Remember when Weight Watchers went all “body positive?” Well once again, we call bullshit.
As a result of this announcement I was invited onto Melbourne drive time radio today to speak about this. I knew I would have to speak quickly – all I was thinking was “stick to your points! Don’t be thrown off!” and although I felt fine about the interview, the DJ kept asking “but what else can we doooooo?” (insert handwringing here). Diet Culture, you do suck.
In literally 2 minutes, I couldn’t possibly offer the many alternatives to dieting (yes, Weight Watchers is indeed a diet) or a summary of Health At Every Size and Non Diet Approaches, much as I wanted to. First and foremost, you have options. PS that are not another diet.
Be kind:
Stepping away from dieting takes a lot of courage. We really understand how stepping away from dieting isn’t so easy peasy Add an extra dose of compassion as you navigate the complexities of feelings which may arise when questioning diet culture.

A reminder – You have options. Dieting, counting and worrying is not part of a quality life. You deserve better. Eat foods you love, learn to trust your body again, treat yourself with kindness and compassion and transfer your energy into things that really matter.
Weight Watchers, time’s up. Drop that mic, we’re outta here…..
